5 Ways Students Can Make the Most of Summer Break

Summer break is here—and while it’s a well-deserved time to rest and recharge, it’s also an opportunity. Whether you’re a rising freshman or a soon-to-be senior, how you spend your summer can make a big difference in your future.

At Take Stock in Children Palm Beach County, we believe that every student deserves the chance to dream big and plan ahead. That’s why we’re sharing five practical ways you can use your summer wisely, while still making time for fun.

  1. Get a Jumpstart on College and Career Planning

If you’re in high school, summer is the perfect time to explore your options.

Here’s how:

  • Research colleges and majors. Look into schools you’re interested in—what GPA and test scores do they require? What scholarships are available?
  • Visit campuses (virtually or in person). Many colleges offer free summer tours. Even if you’re not ready to apply, getting a feel for the environment can help you narrow your choices.
  • Create or update your resume. Even if you don’t have a job yet, list your volunteer work, school activities, and accomplishments.

Action Step: Set a goal to explore at least three colleges or careers by the end of the summer.

  1. Volunteer in Your Community

Community service isn’t just for scholarship applications—it’s a chance to develop new skills, build relationships, and discover what you care about.

Look for opportunities at:

  • Local food banks or shelters
  • Libraries and parks
  • Summer camps or youth programs
  • Hospitals or health fairs

Volunteering shows initiative and commitment—qualities that colleges and future employers love to see.

Action Step: Commit to at least 10 hours of community service this summer. Keep track of your hours for your resume or Bright Futures Scholarship requirements.

  1. Practice Self-Growth and Life Skills

Success in school and beyond depends on more than just grades. Use the summer to build life skills that will serve you for years to come.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Learn to manage a budget. Track your spending, open a student bank account, or learn how to save for a goal.
  • Improve time management. Try planning your days using a digital calendar or planner.
  • Strengthen your communication skills. Practice writing professional emails, making phone calls, or even conducting mock interviews.

Action Step: Choose one life skill to work on this summer—whether it’s cooking a meal, organizing your schedule, or writing a professional email.

  1. Prepare for the Upcoming School Year

Use this quieter time to get ahead academically and feel confident going into the next grade.

Try this:

  • Read one book for fun and one for enrichment. Reading improves vocabulary, critical thinking, and focus.
  • Review past material. Struggled in math or English last year? Take 15–30 minutes a day to review concepts.
  • Get organized. Set up folders for each subject, clear out old papers, and make a study space at home.

Action Step: Create a weekly schedule that includes 30 minutes a day of academic prep. Small efforts now pay off big in the fall.

  1. Set Personal and Academic Goals

Summer is a great time for reflection. What went well last school year? What would you like to improve?

Use SMART goals:

  • Specific – What exactly do you want to accomplish?
  • Measurable – How will you track progress?
  • Achievable – Is this realistic?
  • Relevant – Why does this matter to you?
  • Time-bound – When will you achieve it?

Action Step: Write down three SMART goals—one personal, one academic, and one related to your future (college/career).
